Kids’ robotics in Calgary
Robotics programs in Calgary cover LEGO Mindstorms and WeDo for younger kids, EV3 and SPIKE Prime in the middle, and VEX or Arduino for older kids. Most kid-focused classes start at 7–8.
The big path of progression is the FIRST LEGO League (FLL) system. FLL Explore (ages 6–10) is the intro level, FLL Challenge (ages 9–16) is the competitive league with an annual challenge and regional tournaments in Calgary each fall. Kids who stick with it for a few years often move into FIRST Tech Challenge or FIRST Robotics Competition in high school.
Price-wise, after-school robotics classes run $45–75 per session, or $350–650 per 8–10 week term. Gear is usually provided in class but a home LEGO Mindstorms or SPIKE Prime kit (roughly $400–550) is helpful for kids who want to tinker between classes. Arduino starter kits run $50–100.
Summer robotics camps at universities and specialty academies run $400–800 for a full-day week. UCalgary’s Minds in Motion and SAIT Youth both cover robotics in their summer programming.
I’m going to be honest — robotics classes vary enormously in quality. The bad ones hand kids a pre-built robot and a script; kids get a completed certificate but didn’t build or program anything. Good classes give kids the pieces, a problem to solve, and time to iterate. Ask what the kid goes home having done — not what they went home with.
Registration for fall terms opens in August. FLL team recruitment happens in early fall with a competition arc through November–February. Summer camps open January–February.
