Kids’ coding in Calgary
Calgary has after-school coding programs that cover the full ladder: visual block-based coding (Scratch, Scratch Jr), text-based languages (Python, JavaScript), game-making (Roblox, Unity, Minecraft modding), and full-stack web for older kids. SAIT Youth runs the longest-established structured programs; independent coding academies, library-run Scratch clubs, and university-affiliated camps fill out the rest.
Most structured programs start at 6–7 with visual block-based coding. Scratch is the default — drag-and-drop blocks that snap together into working code. Text-based languages like Python usually land at 9–10, once reading and typing are solid. Full-stack web or game engines (Unity, Unreal) are typically for 11+.
Price-wise, after-school coding classes run $35–65 per session, or $300–600 per 8–10 week term. Summer coding camps at academies and universities run $400–700 per full-day week. Library Scratch clubs are free but fill quickly. The Calgary Public Library’s TD Great Reading Room and Central Library branches run free Scratch and robotics drop-ins — worth checking as a cheap first trial.
Laptops are usually provided during class. Homework and practice between classes needs a computer at home — a basic Chromebook or an older laptop is fine. Scratch runs in any browser; Python runs on anything.
I’m going to be honest — kid coding has a lot of overpriced options. Before signing up, ask: How many kids per instructor? What’s the ratio at the keyboard vs lectured at? Do kids finish each class with a working project to show you? A good kid coding class feels like a makerspace, not a lecture.
Registration for fall terms opens in August. Summer camps open January–February. Competitive events — First Lego League, coding competitions — run on their own September-to-February arc.
