Kids’ chess in Calgary
Calgary has a surprisingly strong kid chess scene. School lunchtime clubs are the most common entry point, but there are also dedicated kid chess classes, Saturday-morning drop-in clubs, and a running tournament circuit with events most months of the year.
Most programs start at 5–6, once the kid can remember how the pieces move. Introductory classes focus on piece movement, simple captures, and checkmate patterns. By 7–8, kids who stick with it are solving puzzles, learning basic openings, and playing timed games.
Price-wise, after-school chess classes run $20–35 per session, or $150–300 per 8-week term. Drop-in club nights typically cost $5–15. Tournament entry fees run $15–40 depending on rating category and tournament level. Online coaching — often a one-on-one FaceTime or Zoom lesson with a tournament-rated player — runs $30–60 per hour.
The Calgary Junior Chess Club runs the main kid tournament circuit. Chess Alberta is the provincial governing body and publishes the tournament calendar. For non-competitive kids, school clubs and library drop-ins are the cheapest and easiest way in.
I’m going to be honest — chess is a grind. For the right kid, it’s addictive. For the wrong kid, it’s a weekly argument. Try a free drop-in club night first before paying for a class — you’ll know within an evening whether your kid wants more.
Registration for term classes usually opens a month before term start. Tournaments list on the Chess Alberta site roughly a month to a few weeks out. A portable chess set and a $5 chess clock app are the full gear list.
