Kids’ tennis in Calgary

Tennis Calgary runs the public red-ball programs for 4–10s through the summer at community courts. Private clubs — OSTEN & VICTOR Alberta Tennis Centre, Glencoe, Calgary Winter Club — add year-round indoor lessons and longer sessions.

The red-ball system is how kids learn. Smaller court, slower ball, lower net. Red progresses to orange (4s and 5s), then green (full court). By 8 or 9 most kids are ready for regular-court play.

Summer group lessons through Tennis Calgary land around $100–180 per session (4–6 weeks, once a week). Private club programs run higher — often members-only, with non-member pricing in the $200–400 range for a comparable block. Private one-on-one coaching lands around $60–100 per hour.

Summer-only is the gotcha. Public lessons run May through August. For year-round lessons you need an indoor bubble — that’s what the private clubs and the Alberta Tennis Centre give you. Expect a waitlist or a member-only gate.

The free option is real. Every City-run community court is first-come, bring-your-own-racquet. Nets are permanent. Communities with multiple courts — Confederation Park, Stanley Park, Bowness — rarely have all courts occupied, even at peak. Evenings after 4pm are the sweet spot on hot days.

Registration for summer lessons opens in early spring, March or April depending on provider. Popular community slots fill in a week or two. Gear is light — a red-ball racquet (junior-sized), court shoes, a few balls. Most of what you see online about junior tennis gear is overkill for ages 4–8.
