Kids’ basketball in Calgary
Community associations and Basketball Calgary run most of the kid programs. The Genesis Centre and YMCAs do drop-in hoops. Outdoor courts in most communities are free first-come.
The grass-roots entry point is usually a community-association league or a YMCA program, not a private club. Community leagues run in fall-winter blocks (roughly October through March) with once-a-week practice and a Saturday game. Basketball Calgary’s grass-roots programs feed the competitive system; their MiniBall and Grassroots programs start around age 6.
Most grass-roots programs start at 6–7 (Grade 1). Before that it’s usually a sports-sampler class, not basketball specifically. Kids can dribble at 4 but they can’t run a 3-on-3 drill.
Pricing for community-level kid basketball runs roughly $150–300 per season. YMCA basketball is bundled into membership plus a per-session fee. City Sport Hub drop-ins are free — check their current schedule for kid sessions.
Registration for fall community leagues opens in August–September. Competitive (club) tryouts happen September–October. Both fill quickly in the neighbourhoods with the strongest basketball culture.
Shoes are the main gear. Running shoes are fine for year one; real indoor basketball shoes once the kid is running full-court. A size-5 ball for 7–8s, size-6 for 9–11s, size-7 from around 12. Outdoor courts — McHugh Bluff, Glenbrook, Confederation — are free and usually empty on weekday evenings.
