Kids’ survival camps in Calgary

Bushcraft and wilderness-skills camps are a niche but real Calgary summer offering. Fire lighting, shelter building, tracking, basic knife skills, plant identification, navigation — the stuff kids learn by doing, outdoors, with a knowledgeable adult.

Day camps for 6+ are the entry point. A week of 9-to-4, usually at a natural area within driving distance (Fish Creek Park, Glenmore Reservoir, Bragg Creek, Kananaskis). Overnight programs start around age 10 and run 3–7 days at a mountain base camp. A smaller number of week-long backcountry camps cater to teens.

Price-wise, day camps run $350–600 per week. Overnight programs run $600–1400 per week depending on trip length, travel, and whether equipment is provided. Backcountry trips and specialty outdoor-leadership programs run higher.

Registration opens January–February for summer, same as other specialty camps. Slots fill faster than general camps — there are fewer spots, and parents who choose these camps tend to book early.

The programs range from gentle nature-education (closer to a forest school) to serious wilderness survival with flint-and-steel, water purification, and multi-day wilderness travel. Ask what skills the week is actually teaching — and how much of it is hands-on vs watching. Good instructors spend more time running drills than lecturing.

Gear varies by program. Day camps usually provide everything except a water bottle, lunch, and weather-appropriate clothes. Overnight programs send a kit list 4–6 weeks out: proper hiking boots, rain gear, sleeping bag rated for Alberta nights, and sometimes a small backpack. Cost of outfitting a kid from scratch can run $200–400; borrow where you can.

For the right kid, this is transformative. For the wrong kid, it’s a long week away from home. Start with a day camp before signing up for an overnight.
