Kids’ Scouts in Calgary

Scouts Canada (co-ed) and Girl Guides (girls) are the two big national programs with strong Calgary networks. Both start at age 5 — Beavers for Scouts, Sparks for Girl Guides — and progress in age-based sections through to teens.

Scouts Canada ladder: Beavers (5–7), Cubs (8–10), Scouts (11–14), Venturers (15–17), Rovers (18–26). Girl Guides ladder: Sparks (5–6), Embers (7–8), Guides (9–11), Pathfinders (12–14), Rangers (15–17). Both meet weekly in community halls or church basements, usually 60–90 minutes, run by volunteer leaders who’ve been through the police-check and training process.

Price-wise, annual membership runs roughly $220–280 per year for either organization, which includes insurance, national program fees, and local meeting costs. Uniforms are extra — a starter uniform runs $40–100 depending on section. Camping weekends, badge trips, and special outings are extra fees, usually $20–150 per trip.

Camping is the differentiator. Both programs do 3–6 camping weekends per year — family camps (with parents) at the younger sections, kid-only camps at the older sections. Calgary groups camp at Camp Gardner, Camp Jubilee, and various Alberta provincial parks. A week-long summer camp is common for older sections.

Registration opens in August for the September–June year. Beavers and Sparks can sometimes join mid-year if there’s space in the local colony or unit. Groups vary a lot by community — some have 30+ kids and a strong leader team, others are scraping by with volunteers. Ask about group size and leader tenure before committing.

This is one of the best-value kid activities in Calgary for the amount of outdoor time, friendships, and life skills.
