Kids’ horseback riding in Calgary

Stables around Calgary — De Winton, Springbank, Bragg Creek, Millarville — run kid riding lessons in English and Western styles. Most take kids from 6 once they can follow multi-step instructions from a saddle and manage stable safety around large animals.

Weekly lessons are the standard format. 45–60 minutes per session, usually group classes of 2–4 kids at the intro level, dropping to private lessons as kids progress. English (hunter/jumper, dressage) and Western (pleasure, ranch, barrel racing) are two different tracks with different tack, different riding posture, and different progression paths. Most stables teach one or the other.

Price-wise, group lessons run $45–80 per session, or $360–700 per 8-lesson block. Private lessons are $70–120 per hour. Summer horse camps — a week of stable work, riding, and horse care — run $450–900 for a full week.

Driving time is the reality check. Most riding stables are 20–45 minutes outside the city. If you’re committing to weekly lessons, factor the round-trip into the schedule — it’s easily a 2–3 hour evening.

Summer horse camps are a common entry point. One week of mucking-and-riding before committing to weekly lessons. Kids find out fast whether they actually like being around horses, or whether they just liked the idea of it.

Gear: closed-toe boots with a small heel (riding boots or any boot with a heel — not sneakers). Long pants. Helmet — most stables provide one for lessons but ask. No loose jewellery. Total starter gear cost is usually $60–150 if you buy basic boots and a helmet.
