Kids’ martial arts in Calgary
Calgary has dojos covering the usual spread: karate (Shotokan, Kyokushin, Wado-Ryu), taekwondo, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ), kung fu, judo, and mixed programs. Most take kids from 4, a few take 3s with a parent.
The style debate is overrated. What matters is the instructor, the class size, and whether the dojo treats kids as kids — not as mini-adults doing watered-down adult classes. The good kid programs have age-separated classes, dedicated kid instructors, and structured belt progressions that keep 6-year-olds motivated without over-promising.
Price is usually a monthly membership model. Roughly $90–180 per month for 2–3 classes per week. Some dojos bundle uniforms and belt-test fees, others charge them on top. Belt tests typically run $40–100 each and happen every 3–6 months.
I’m going to be honest — watch a class before you commit. Ask for a free trial. Look for: kids actually engaged, instructors who correct without humiliating, clean mats, realistic progression. Walk out if the sales pitch is longer than the class tour.
Year-round makes this one of the easier commitments. Most dojos don’t run on a semester system; kids start the month you enrol and continue as long as you pay. That also means there’s no registration rush — pick your dojo when you’re ready.
Gear at the start: usually just a gi (uniform) that the dojo sells at cost or bundles with signup. Mouthguard when sparring starts. Belts are supplied as the kid tests up.
