Kids’ ballet in Calgary
Calgary has two tiers of ballet: classical schools with audition-based pre-professional streams (Alberta Ballet School, The School of Dance) and recreational multi-style studios that teach ballet alongside jazz, tap, and contemporary.
For most kids, the recreational route is the starting point. Creative-movement classes — the first pre-ballet — typically start at 3. Graded ballet with proper barre work usually starts at 6. The graded systems most studios follow are Cecchetti, RAD (Royal Academy of Dance), or ISTD syllabus, which means exams, steady progression, and transferable levels if you switch studios.
Price-wise, a weekly recreational ballet class at a neighbourhood studio runs roughly $50–85 per month, or $400–800 per dance-school year (September through June). Add recital costs — costume fees, recital-ticket minimums, and photo packages — which can add $150–350 per kid per year. Pre-professional streams cost multiples of this and involve 5+ classes a week.
I’m going to be honest — most studios are recital-driven, which is fine if your kid wants to be on stage, frustrating if they just want to dance. Ask about the recital expectation before you sign up. A small number of studios skip recitals and keep fees simpler.
Registration opens in spring (May–June) for the September start. Trial classes are commonly offered the first two weeks of September — a good hedge if you’re not sure about the studio fit.
Gear: leotard, tights, ballet slippers (leather or canvas), hair in a bun. Most studios have a dress code and will sell uniforms through their preferred dancewear shop.
