Kids’ guitar in Calgary

Guitar teachers in Calgary work out of neighbourhood music schools, private home studios, and the occasional community association. Mount Royal Conservatory runs guitar too, grading against the RCM guitar syllabus. Electric and acoustic are both well-covered; classical guitar on nylon strings is the traditional early track.

Most teachers take kids from 6–7 — hand size is the gate. Fretting chords on a full-sized guitar is painful for small fingers, which is why the early years are played on a 1/2 or 3/4-sized guitar. Most music shops in Calgary will size a kid correctly; a fitted classical nylon-string starter runs $120–250 new.

Price-wise, private half-hour lessons land around $30–45 with an independent teacher, $45–70 at a conservatory. 45-minute lessons become the norm around age 9–10. Group classes run cheaper but are rarer than in piano — most guitar teaching is one-on-one.

I’m going to be honest — the first year of guitar is harder than piano. Fingertips hurt. Chord shapes take weeks to stick. Practice feels like nothing is working for the first couple of months. The kids who stick with it usually have a parent willing to sit through 10 minutes of practice, not just nag about it.

Registration pattern is the same as piano: August–September for fall, open spots mid-year if a student drops. The conservatory runs on a semester system; private teachers run rolling schedules. Steel-string acoustic and electric introduce themselves around age 10–12, once calluses have built up.

Gear beyond the guitar itself: a tuner (a $15 clip-on or a phone app), a soft case for transport, and a music stand for practice. Picks are optional for classical style; required for strumming.

Parent FAQ

What size guitar for a 7-year-old?

A 1/2 or 3/4 size nylon-string classical guitar is the usual starter. Steel-string acoustic is harder on fingers — wait until the kid is older.
