Kids’ babysitting in Calgary
The Red Cross Babysitting Course (ages 11–15) is the standard Calgary kids take to get their first paid work. Covers basic child care, feeding, bedtime, safety, simple first aid, and what to do in emergencies. One-day or two-half-day commitment, certification at the end, and the cards show up on neighbourhood-babysitter listings.
St. John Ambulance runs a similar Home Alone course for 9–10s — same logic, one step earlier, focused on kids who stay home briefly without an adult (fire safety, calling for help, basic house-rule compliance). Both programs run weekend classes throughout the year in community centres, rec centres, and public libraries.
Price-wise, a Red Cross Babysitting Course runs $65–120 depending on the provider. Home Alone runs $45–90. Standard Child and Youth First Aid with CPR (often the next step for older kids who want to level up their babysitting cards) runs $110–180.
Registration is rolling — new classes show up on the Red Cross Canada and St. John Ambulance Alberta websites most months. Slots fill in the last two weeks before class. If your kid is approaching 11 and wants to start babysitting younger siblings or neighbours, book the next available class.
The cards aren’t legally required to babysit in Alberta, but they’re the expected standard that families ask for. Most kids book their first paid babysitting job within a month of finishing the course, usually for a neighbour or a family friend.
No gear. Kids bring a lunch, a pen, and a water bottle. The class manual is provided.
